Soil & Filling Guide

Healthy plants start with the right foundation. Filling your garden bed properly ensures strong root development, proper drainage, and long-term productivity.

For best results, use a balanced blend of high-quality garden soil and compost. A common and effective mix is approximately 70% garden soil and 30% compost. This combination provides structure for root support while delivering the nutrients and organic matter plants need to thrive.

Avoid filling your bed with heavy topsoil alone. Dense soils can compact easily, restrict airflow, and prevent proper drainage — all of which can limit root growth and reduce yields.

Soil Capacity

Measure the interior dimensions (Length × Width × Depth) to calculate cubic feet required.

Layer Your Soil Gradually

Add soil in layers rather than all at once to promote even settling and better structure throughout the bed.

Avoid Over-Compacting

Do not press the soil down firmly — roots need oxygen and loose soil to grow strong and healthy.

Water as You Fill

Lightly water between layers to help the soil settle naturally and reduce large air pockets.
